MacFloss: a Mac disk cleaner that asks before it touches anything

A disk cleaner that shows its working. MacFloss scans the places that quietly fill up, tells you what it found and how big it is, and then does nothing until you say so.

Requires macOS 14 (Sonoma) or later. Runs on Apple Silicon and Intel Macs. The download is a .zip: open it and the disk image is inside.

What it cleans

App caches, leftovers from apps you deleted years ago, developer build caches: the folders that grow for months without anyone looking. MacFloss scans them, lists what it found with sizes, and waits for you.

How it keeps you safe

  • Nothing is deleted. By default everything goes to the Trash, so a clean is something you can look at afterwards and change your mind about.
  • It writes down what it did. Before it moves a single file it records the move. A plain double-clickable script puts everything back, and it needs neither MacFloss nor an internet connection to do it.
  • Your own files are off-limits. It works on caches and leftovers, not on your documents.
  • Deep clean is opt-in. The system-level jobs run through an approved background helper, so you approve once instead of typing your password each time. It is switched off until you switch it on.

More than a cleaner

  • App uninstaller: removes an app and the support files, caches and preferences it left scattered around.
  • Homebrew maintenance, with a rollback snapshot of what changed.

Trial, free tier and price

The trial lasts 14 days with everything unlocked. After that MacFloss keeps working for free: scanning stays unlimited, and each clean removes up to 500 MB. The full version is 15 euro a year, billed yearly through Stripe.

Why this approach

Most disk cleaners ask for your password, delete first and explain later. MacFloss is built the other way round: show everything, touch nothing without permission, move rather than delete, and leave a written record with an undo script that works even if the app is gone. If a clean ever removes something you wanted, it is in the Trash, and the script puts it back where it was.

Getting started

  1. Download the .zip, open it, and drag MacFloss from the disk image to Applications.
  2. Launch it and run a scan. Nothing is moved at this stage.
  3. Tick what you want cleaned and confirm. Files go to the Trash and the move is logged.
  4. Deep clean, the app uninstaller and Homebrew maintenance are in their own sections when you want them.

MacFloss is one of five small Mac apps I make. See also Clipmunk and DiscoSync, or the full list.

Frequently asked questions

Will MacFloss delete my documents?

No. It works on caches and leftovers only; your own files are off-limits. And by default nothing is deleted at all: items go to the Trash.

Can I undo a clean?

Yes. MacFloss records every move before it makes it, and a plain double-clickable script puts everything back. The script does not need MacFloss or an internet connection.

Do I have to type my password every time?

No. Deep clean runs through an approved background helper that you authorise once. It is switched off until you turn it on.

What is free after the trial?

Scanning stays unlimited, and each clean removes up to 500 MB. The full version is 15 euro a year.

Does it uninstall apps?

Yes. The app uninstaller removes an app together with the support files, caches and preferences it left behind.

Which Macs does it run on?

Any Mac running macOS 14 (Sonoma) or later, Apple Silicon or Intel.
